Courthouse Square
Missing YouCourthouse Square is the downtown setting for Jessica Mastriani’s effort to confront Randall Whitehead Sr. and Randy Whitehead Jr. Its Fountain Building becomes the destination of a tense procession, while the square’s courthouse steps frame the exhausted aftermath of the investigation that follows.
Setting and Approach
Jessica directs the group to Courthouse Square because Randall Whitehead Sr.’s offices are in the Fountain Building, and she believes Randy Whitehead Jr. will be there too. Rob Wilkins confirms that they are going to see the elder Whitehead; Jessica confirms the plan. The square is therefore not merely a place they pass through: it is the stated destination of their attempt to reach both men.
The Fountain Building and Its Surroundings
The group climbs down from a pickup and waits for the light before crossing the street to the Fountain Building. The building also houses the local bank and a yoga studio. On the way, they pass Underground Comix, where Jessica’s brother Douglas Mastriani works. The shop is closed at nine thirty, an hour before its ten o’clock opening. These ordinary details place the confrontation within a recognizable downtown routine, even as the men from a sedan are already waiting at the building entrance; they apparently found parking closer than the group did.
Investigation and Aftermath
Several hours later, Jessica, Rob, and Douglas emerge from the District Attorney’s office. Jessica has had to explain how she came across the videos that she gave to Douglas to deliver to the authorities. Kristin Pine, the prosecution’s star witness, is being kept in protective custody until her parents can collect her. The investigation’s consequences thus extend beyond the meeting at the Fountain Building, bringing the group back to the courthouse area under very different circumstances.
Narrative Significance
The square links the planned confrontation with the legal response to the evidence. The approach is marked by movement across a street and the sight of the sedan’s men waiting at the entrance; the later scene shifts to the courthouse steps, where hunger and exhaustion register the hours spent explaining the videos and dealing with the authorities. Courthouse Square anchors both stages of the plot without becoming a mere backdrop: it is where the pursuit of the Whiteheads turns toward formal investigation and witness protection.
